Groups
Outreach in the local and world community is important to the Hopewell United Methodist congregation. A number of small groups gather to learn more about the needs of the community, grow together spiritually and minister to others.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN
Our Purpose: The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
United Methodist Women meetings and events are open to all women. Membership in the church is not required. The current president is Pat Grant.
UMW Meetings are held after worship. Join us for lunch, followed by a business meeting. United Methodist Women’s meetings are open to all ages and backgrounds (teenagers to great grandmothers.)
We focus on many mission projects that support women, children, youth and the elderly. Learn more about the global ministries of the United Methodist Women. For notices of meetings and events, see our Events page.
UMW SUMMER MISSION PROJECT: School Supplies for Haiti
In response to a program given by Mary Phillips at the United Methodist Women’s Dinner in June, we are initiating a summer mission project to collect school supplies for the children of Haiti through the month of August. Sales have already begun on school supplies, so now is a good time to purchase them. These supplies will go to missionary working with young students located in Les Cayes in the south west of the southern peninsular of Haiti.
Below is a list of supplies which these schools are presently using. A collection box has been placed in the Sun Room.
- Back packs, as made to available patterns or small “store bought” type (with no metal frame)
- Book bags (pattern available) PUT A VELCRO CLOSURE ON EACH BAG
- Pencils (regular, #2, with eraser; new, in package).
- Ballpoint pens – Black – fine point for students;
- Red for teachers (50 – 1 ratio)
- Sets of colored pencils
- Personal pencil sharpeners
- Erasers, cap types or others
- Crayons, either 16 or 24 packs
- Rulers, metric necessary, can include inches
- Compasses and protractors, other drawing aids
- Scissors for children (blunt point)
Monetary donations: Used to purchase a special type of notebook only available in Haiti and for shipping costs. Please indicate on your check (payable to School Supplies for Haiti) on the memo line either “Shipping” or “Notebooks.” Monetary donations can be given to Francina Case.
Many items not on the list cannot be used in Haiti. Any item that cannot be used in Haiti will be taken to either the Neighborhood Center in Camden or Ranch Hope in NJ or Henderson Settlement, a part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference in southeast Kentucky.
UNITED METHODIST MEN
The mission of United Methodist Men is to assist men to know Jesus Christ, to serve Him, to grow spiritually and seek daily to do his will.
The men’s group leader is Paul Bejgrowicz. Please contact him if you’d like to join.
METHODIST YOUTH FELLOWSHIP
Teens and pre-teens meet each Sunday evening from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. for topical discussions of faith. They are led by youth director Lorraine Donahue.
This is a time to get together with other Christian young people and “hang out.”
Once a month the group goes on a special event (movie, concert, field trip).
The Youth are actively involved in the church’s puppet ministry, “Christian Critters.” Our teens write scripts for the puppets and group members join in to make the puppets “come alive.” Our youngsters really love the Christian Critters. (Also look for the Critters at the Hopewell Council of Churches’ Vacation Bible School where they have been known to make appearances.)
Each year, the Youth Group supports mission projects, such as “Souper Bowl Sunday” which occurs the week that the football Super Bowl is held. The Youth collect donations to support a local soup kitchen which feeds the hungry and homeless.
The Youth Group sponsors the annual church-wide talent show each spring. The congregation shares their talents and there is a great time of music, skits, puppets and more!

Book Study
Do you enjoy reading? A book study group who love reading read the same novel or other book and gather to discuss. The titles on the agenda for the next several months include: Any Minute by Joyce Meyer, Simple Gifts by Lori Copeland, One Simple Act by Debbie Macomber, The Help by Kathryin Stockett, Behind Church Doors by Sylvia Brown-Roberts and On Strike for Christmas by Sheila Roberts. Books are announced in the bulletin giving ample time for reading and the group gets together in the evening to dicuss the book. The group is open to all readers. For more information, contact the church at 609-466-0471.
Crafters
The Crafters meet twice a month to work on various handmade projects (wooden, fabric, paper, you name it!) for our Christmas Bazaar. We paint, glue, decorate, etc. There are home projects too for those who can’t get out to meetings. Meetings are scheduled for Monday afternoons from 1 – 3 pm and Tuesday evenings from 7 – 9 pm. Everyone is welcome no matter what the skill level. For more information, contact the church at 609-406-0471.
Choir
We have a small group of people who like to sing and so we get together on Wednesday evenings to prepare anthems and special songs for the weekly worship service. We don’t all read music nor do we all play instruments, we’re just a group who like to make a joyful noise unto the Lord and we’re always ready to welcome newcomers who enjoy doing the same. We practice every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome, regardless of musical talent!
