Please join Dr. Will this coming Sunday, August 1, 2021, as he preaches “A Hot Summer Afternoon Conversation”: The encounter of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at a well (Psalm 91; John 4: 1-13; 39-42)
On one hot summer afternoon, Jesus and his disciples left Judea, Jerusalem, and are headed home to Galilee. On his way, he encountered a young Samaritan lady with a complex past history. Jesus engaged her in a conversation.
In this sermon, I make the case that by talking to this unidentified Samaritan woman, Jesus crossed a cultural and religious boundary. Jewish laws did not allow men to talk to women who were by themselves in public and most good Jews would have avoided to step foot in Samaria. But Jesus was on the mission to override those boundaries.
The conversation of Jesus with the Samaritan woman is a story that reveals the degree to which people can get stuck in religious traditions and doctrine, race, and ethnicity. It is also a triumphal story of crossing boundaries. Above all it is a story of acceptance. God accepting you and me just as we are.
